The 6SN7 is a decent, medium mu, octal, indirectly heated twin triode tube that has reasonably low plate resistance. They can pass a pretty good amount of current as well. The miniature 9 pin version is the 6FQ7/6CG7. They are good at what they do and are easy to work with.
Magical tubes are more in the vein of the directly heated triodes, but they are hard to work with. The regular 12A?7 tubes are great for guitar. The 6DJ8 can also be a pretty good tube.
The circuit is the critical element in designing a great sounding preamp. Any tube can be made to sound like crap.
