Can black plates turn grey over time?

I am looking at 12ax7's for my guitar amp and am interested in trying some with a long black plate.

I know ebay if full of scammers and people who don't know alot about what they are selling. Anyhow, I have seen a few 12ax7's advertised as Long Black Plate with horrible pictures.

It is very hard to tell but the plates sometimes look more grey than black.

Can the black color deteriorate over time?
