Hey Ed, I bit bit the bullet and ordered a quad of WE845's even at their price.
What got me over the line was listening to my Psvane Ts in my brother's system. He lost his house in severe bushfires last year, audio gear and vinyl collection included. His mate lost his too, we were all due for a music night the following night ... but that's a whole other story!
Anyway, my brother has gone with Hi-Res digital for now and bought a pair of 2nd hand Wilson Duets. They showed great promise and were awesome at my place for their size but couldn't quite get them to sing at his. He was running SS amps so I lent him a few tube amps to try including the prototypes to my current 845s. Even with standard Chinese tubes this was a whole new world and he's hooked!
I later pulled a pair of Ts from my amps for him to try. The difference in sheer musicality from top to bottom was incredible so the plan is for him to run with them for now and I'll try the WEs. I should have them next week and will post my impressions.
FWIW, I scored a pair of RCA 845s along the way and gave them to my brother to try. I haven't heard them in his system but his description matches my previous experience, nicely detailed with plenty of air but missing the fullness and bass of the Ts. I'm sure they could be made to work but the Psvanes sound so good that there's been little incentive, who'd have thought it.
A friend of mine is an Elrog dealer but the price they are asking for 845s is stupidly high, much more expensive here even than the Psvane WE845s so I haven't been tempted ... that and the feedback I've read.
I'd really love to know the character of the real WE284s, can't believe you have a pair ... actually I can:) Perhaps you could post your impressions one day.
