Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |
|
I leave my4 tube preamp (2)12AX7 + (2) 12AU7 on all the time.
It have been running for years, no problem.
Of late it may start making small noises .. sort of like sputtering, little scratching sounds that vary in tempo and loudness.. Almost like a fire cracking. If I turn it off and let it cool overnight, Then it is fine again for several days.My question is: What are the tubes doing when it is making this noise?
Are bits of the heater melting off? And why does it stop for days after the unit is allowed to fully cool off? (it never gets very warm anyway)
Anyway I plan on continuing to use the preamp as is until the tubes really go to Hell.
I am fine with that course of action.
As it is now, the noise is way below the threshold of the music, and can only be heard with no music, me up close to the speakers.
Just wanted some opinions on what the tubes are doing inside there.
Thanks.
