I tried 3 stages - 26 into 46 into 300b, Nice enough until I tried 2 stages with a DAC that outputs 2v. Removed a whole veil from the sound. The 300b is no good for 2 stages of DHTs - not enough gain forces you to use indirectly heated tubes like 12AX7, not something I'd want to do. I use 4P1L into LL1660/25mA in 1:1 into PSE 4P1L outputs. I get enough gain with two stages. Perfect. I also use both stages in filament bias so no cathode bypass caps, and that lifts yet another veil. I have no reason to go back to 300bs or even 2a3s. Took me a long, long while to work all that out but once I did - 18m ago - I haven't built another amp, and no reason to do so.
