May sound heretical, but I'd put the money into a really good DAC like Schiit Gungnir. If you have enough gain in your system I absolutely would not add a stage. You'll lose transparency. I'd only use a preamp if I didn't have enough gain in the amp. Change the amp, maybe, but a good DAC puts out 2v which is more than enough for amps, ss or tube.
