Several HK stereo amplifiers used the 6L6 (I have an A-260). I think you're correct that they didn't use the 6L6 in any of their receivers. The reason was probably exactly as you said - smaller tubes. In addition to reduced dissipation ratings and a smaller envelope, tubes like the 7355 were a better fit for the relatively low output voltage of the doubler arrangement that HK seemed to be so fond of. In fact, even the A-260 amplifier doesn't supply enough voltage to take advantage of the 6L6GCs specified for that model. It's probably not coincidence that later models like the A-500 switched to 7355s. It's also worth noting that 7355-based receivers like the TA-260 and 5000X required power transformers that were really massive compared to those in the standalone amplifiers producing approximately the same audio output power. That must have been a major consideration in designing these products.
