Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: Tungsol kt120

Well I used to agree with Nunki regarding KT120's up to a point. After 100hrs in my Octave V110 they got very pronounced (kind of honky) in the mids with an almost sizzle (not sparkle) in the highs. It WAS the tube I hated the most with the original TS 6550 black plates being my favorite and the Ei KT90's coming in second. Wow how that has changed!!!

Ok let me explain. When I made those comments I had Dynaudio C1 Signatures for speakers. Great speaker value for the money. But after trading those in for Raidho D1's my tune really changed regarding tubes. At the time of the speaker upgrade I had the Ei KT90's in (still my second favorite). Put the TS 6550 black plates in and the highs rolled off drastically and the mids got somewhat blurry with the lows seemed mushy. Tried the KT120's for grins and giggles and low and behold they sound great with the Raidho's. So does the original Gec KT88 (which was right down there with the KT120 when I had Dyns).

So I would have to say speakers can make a huge difference when rolling tubes. Now what was my favorite is now my least favorite and what was my least favorite is now my favorite. Ei KT90's always come in second. Go figure??!!?? I would still love to hear the KT150's someday but I will wait for Jim M to stock them first (no hurry) (also heard that TS is working on a KT180 - where will it stop). Oh and the KT150's have been approved for my Octave but not for more power - only sonic difference between them and the KT120's.
