E188CC is the european equivalent of 7308 tube. It is rated at 250 volts while a 6922/E88CC is rated at 220 volts. The two russian tubes mentioned by The Duke are both rated 300 volts so I believe the answer to the longevity or lack thereof lies there. The "pick of the crop E88CC" is anything with a CCA designation. These tubes were run thru a series of certification tests for the West German postal service. All CCA'S were E88CC's as 6922 was the U.S. designation. Not all CCA's were german tubes as many were made by Amperex from 1956 to 1959. The E188CC/7308 is a different tube that can be substituted for a 6DJ8 or E88CC.
I would definitely give the E188CC's a spin. I have both the Amperex USN-CEP 7308 and a pair of Phillips Miniwatt E188CC. The 7308 tubes (made in Hicksville, N.Y.) are more detailed and analytical than the E188CC tubes (made in Heerlen, Holland) which offer a little more body and soul, the 7308's just work a little better in the application in which I use them in my 3rd system. My E188CC's are the VR5 revision which is the 6th revision of these tubes. All 7308/E188CC tubes carry the VR designation if produced by Amperex/Phillips. VR0 and VR1 were D-getter tubes and only produced from late '59 until late '60 or there about. Then came the VR3 and then the VR5. My E188CC's are VR5's and were produced in 1962. The VR0 and VR1 tubes are very rare and expensive. Strive for the VR3's, Vr5's are fine and more plentiful, the series tends to start to slide after that. Hope this helps.
