The CCS replaces the 100 KOhm load resistor of the 2nd gain block, when either a buffered volume control or an outright passive control center is employed. Between the CCS and the ZVN0545A buffer, close to 40 dB. of gain are realized in the 2nd block.12AX7s are a fabulous voltage amplifier but they can't fight their way out of a wet paper bag.Driving into the ZVN0545A eases the tension of doing that.
