I don't think there's any risk of damage to the equipment unless you plug in a tube of different pin connections. Certain swaps might be hard on the tubes, though it's likely in those cases that it wouldn't work at all and they wouldn't be in the socket for long...
The most likely result if a substitution ends up being biased far from optimum is a high level of second harmonic, which actually doesn't sound that bad.
