Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: New Production 6922's - there are several

The JJ tube is warm, but some people think they are grainy towards the top. That leaves you with China and Russia. I don't know anybody using Chinese 6922. In Russia the best ones are made by Reflektor, and are sold three ways.

The Electro Harmonix, which is great, measures well, with a warm presentation. The Gold Lion which is in essence the same tube from the same factory, but supposedly better tolerances. They perform the same to me.

The older Reflektor, commonly referred to as a 6H23-EB. It is quieter and more durable than the EH and Gold Lion tube in tough situations. It has more of a "straight line" sound. Not quite as warm. But is the best choice (really one of the only choices) for Audible Illusions gear.

There is still a ton of NOS available. In a phono stage it would be a good idea to go somewhere that tests them. One choice that is superb, quiet, and not too expensive is the Tungsram.

If you can afford it, there was a batch of perfect Telefunken E88CC available that will never exist again. That is the best that I know of. If you want a softer top end and rounder bass, try an Amperex 7308. Excellent tube.

It would be good to know what gear it's going in.
