Old wives tales and Mullard...

Mullard never subcontracted to Matsushita , stories of Mullard selling their tooling to Matsushita are nonsense . From what I understand , at the closure of the productions lines , the equipment was scrapped . After all , who in their right mind would want the fool's errand of starting up a fresh tube production line in the 1980's after shipping tons of equipment to the other side of the world ? Matsushita was a Philips licensee so would have already used Philips/Mullard patterns (and possibly parts) to produce their tubes but that's just about it . Their stuff would have looked similar , but in the case of their EL34 , would have had a seamed top . If you ever saw a Matsushita EL34 branded with a Mullard logo on it , it would have had nothing to do with Mullard whatsoever . Those Matsushita 'Mullards' would have been doctored with fresh lettering/boxes at a later stage when the supply of genuine Mullard EL34 was drying up , more than likely in North America . I have said this time and again on this forum that the reasons behind the vast majority of rebranding of this nature is clearly to increase value of cheap or garden variety tubes by unscrupulous distributors... It's still going on today , especially in the UK and it's the main reason why I no longer deal with several of the distributors here...

Al

ps I'd love to see a picture of one of these top-seamed EL34 with Mullard branding , I have never seen one .
