RE: short 5751 list, help for decission...

Of the tubes on your "short list" my preference would be the 60's GE TMGP. I had a CAL Alpha dac in my main system for quite a while before purchasing my Wadia 15i. I still have a CAL Sigma dac in mt 2nd system, both use 12ax7 tubes. I have tried all 3 on your list and the GE was the clear winner of those 3. I ran a LOT of tubes thru the Alpha in the beginning including many of the various tubes listed here in addition to both plate style Telefunkens and the vaunted Amperex long plate with foil-strip d-getter. I did not try the Teslas or the Raytheon windmills. The 5751 that I found to be the best performer by a large margin was the "clipped" version of the early 50's GE TMBP. These can be indentified by the silver clips crimped around the grid posts where they protrude thru the bottom and 2nd micas. These have a large square or d getter. These were produced from 1952-1954 and made in the KEN RAD plant (which GE acquired in 1950)in Owensboro, Kentucky as signified by the 188-5 production code. These were made in huge quantities for the U.S. military and are still available today. It's a very dynamic tube, well balanced top to bottom. A lot of the others mentioned here give something in one area while lack in another. The mid 50's version eliminated the clips and these aren't quite as dynamic IMHO. The o getter was introduced in 58 or so and these sound a bit thin to me. I had a pair of 1961 GE 5 STAR TMGP with red printing that I felt were just as good as the mid 50's version of the TMBP, they just weren't quite as good as the "silver clips". If you're sticking to your short list go with the GE TMGP, if you feel like tube rolling a little, then get a pair of "silver clips".
