Large storage does two things. One is energy storage for surges in energy use. The other is smoothing AC which is just as important. Large caps smooth better. But tube gear sometimes has more elaborate smoothing circuitry with multiple capacitor stages and inductors. This type of power supply is especially good at smoothing AC. In deed inductors are superb at this. In this case for tubes(this type of supply is very rare in solid state) you get the smoothing od a huge capacitor bank without massive capacitance.
