Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: General tube rolling question

"Often times audiophiles will spend a ton of money buying new tubes,or cables,or components and then they go on an analytical crusade by breaking down their favorite recordings bar by bar to justify the money they've spent. When you do that, your listening mechanism is not focused on the total musical experience, but rather a note by note comparison..I don't know how anyone enjoys that but I used to be like that and so did my original audio mentor and an older audiophile finally set us straight.

Sage advice.

"I am a strong believer in sonic acclimation. What I mean by this is, lets say you change tubes and go from a 12AX7 Tele to a Mullard CV-4004 or a Genelex 12AX7 reissue, our brain and hearing mechanism will acclimate to the sonic strong points of each tube that stand out and are important to us,and then our brain will program our hearing mechanism to accept the weaker points of one tube vs the other so we can enjoy the total musical experience."

Agreed. Perfection exists but has a very high price and most of us will not achieve it. The chase stops when you say it does. ;-)

Sonic acclimation: High frequencies are my hot button. I'll take a little rolled off rather than overdone. Another listener may be just the opposite.
