RE: " compared to the tube amp it has the usual SS sound "

I'm using both a NAD C326BEE and Marantz PM8004 preamp sections to drive the NAD. I do not have a tubed preamp.

The source is a Marantz NA7004 that I have used on both the NAD and Sherwood. The difference is as follows.

Sherwood: Wider dynamic range. When a sudden passage flairs there is a wider dynamic volume difference. More depth to the instruments. Wider bass response from subwoofer to lower midrange.

NAD: More detail but less of the above. I'm not complaining but that's what I find.

I've tried a passive preamp on the NAD and it just gets to brittle or bright. Not very pleasant to listen too after a few minutes. It needs the preamp to "buffer" it.
