About five years ago I got the bug and built one of Bruce Rosenblitz's Transcendent Sound Grounded Grid preamps. It employs 3 12AU7 tubes in the signal path. I still have two Onkyo receivers with the pre out and pre in jumpers so I popped the Grounded Grid in and bypassed the built in SS preamplifier. That move transformed two, highly regarded SS amps into amazing amplifiers! They had never sounded that good before or since.
The system stayed like that for a long time before I eventually started building tubed amplifiers to take their place. I still swap them into play during the summer months when the weather is nice and I can take my original DCM Timewindows outside and light them up!
Never going back...
