RE: NOS Sylvania 6SN7 "Bad Boys" Score on ebay

Hi all, As a longtime enthusiast and tube dealer I thought I would make a post to clarify a few things about the Sylvania 3-hole blackplate "bad boy" 6SN7GT.
Advertising this tube for sale lately online, I keep getting all of these questions asking about date codes.
It seems that people have gotten it in their head that "1952" is of some relevance in the equation here.
This tube with the 3-hole blackplate & copper grid posts was made in 4-5 production runs usually from late 51' to mid 53', with a much less commonly found run in late 50' (1st run)
So: they're found with glass codes of 0,1,2 & 3. (4 different years) Same with base codes (which don't really matter as the base is not really the "tube", bases were often put on tubes a long time after the tubes were made).

I remember about 12-13 years ago when someone 1st called them the "badboy" online, they mentioned 1952. This is only because it was the year they had & possibly the most commonly found year, but not by much.

All of these tubes are exactly the same in construction and sound the same. Construction is what is relevant here, not coding. There was also a 3 hole GREY plate "Bad Boy", made in 51' which is obviously a different tube and very rare. I've had about 5 compared to a few hundred blackplate 3-hole. They also sound very good, but I've yet to seriously listen to them. I agree that the 3 hole blackplate Sylvania is one of the very best sounding SN7's and that in some gear can outclass the TSRP and Syl 6SN7W. The clarity of the mids and bass are world class in my experience with very good highs.
Just please stop calling them the 52's!!!!

Have also had some customers who find more synergy with the 2-hole plate tube. Those were made from as early as 40', the earliest tubes had no date codes on the glass and large print Sylvania labels that sometimes said CAA Sylvania (Civil Aviation Authority), then morphed into the well known VT-231 label until about 1945. The tube changed slightly around 46'(green Syl label) with the grid posts going from a chrome metallic material to copper and were made like that until the last runs in 51' which actually overlapped the 1st 3-hole plate run.
Thanks,
Adam OConnell
