The 8-Ohm tap produces higher Voltage which translates into higher speaker level...

...until the amp is driven at a high-enough level so that the amp runs out of power. There's no harm in using either output tap with either speaker load. I'd say your preferred tap is the 4-Ohm one. FWIW, the amp has twice the damping factor from 4- rather than from 8-Ohms.
