RE: TubeAcolyte ---- 400PS

I understand and won't disagree. It's old school, and it's not always economically viable. But in my opinion, novelty of using a 400PS on stage aside, I've found it sounds better (more direct, more engrossing) than most PA system setups unless you're paying top dollar for equipment. I find that most venues and shows I've frequented have not had the financial backing for higher-end gear or compitent sound guy. This mostly resulted in pushing lots of bass through big bins, and the the rest of the system is pushing nice amounts of air but with outrageous distortion (sign of the times, really). It sounds like trash.

I played a show in Montreal: mics on guitar for monitors only, a bit of DI for bass, and mostly vocals and drums into the PA. The guitar amps and 400 PS did most of the work filling the room. It sounded fantastic, better than any rock show I've been to save for Bluesfest and other events of its kind (lo and behold, financially backed pro PA system). Just because PA setups are easier to set up, doesn't mean it's always done right. With a little cab positioning and focusing the PA on fewer instruments, setups I've played and tinkered sound less distorted and enhance the overall experience. The sound permeats the room instead of attacking the ear. When doing shows, I've received nothing but praise by both players and the crowd for the sound. Takes a little more work than sitting in a booth, but who cares. It's fun, and pretty damn epic.

You're right, no one uses my setup with 3 cabs (and frankly, ya, carrying that around is ridiculous, so I seldom go all out and opt for 1-2 cabs). However, it's effect on the crowd outweighs the cons. I'd whip out my setup every time if I could.

You have a myriad of facts you need to double check. The 400 PS was introduced in 1970 and was coupled with 1 to 3 W-bin 1x18" cabs. The Sunn S2000 cab I have is a 2x15 with a funky port design (refining an experimental 2x18" design at the moment, too). Very interesting sounding cab. Fender 300 and 400 Ps amps are not woth 75 on ebay. As for 32ohm 10"s being wired to do 4 ohms... I'm pretty sure I did just that with my 8x10... I'll check to make sure, but I think it was done. I build homebrew cabs with the bro and that was mostly his baby. So I'll check with him and see.

On one last note, please no trolling. Constructive discussion and the learning process are valued here. Your opinion isn't invalid, but your method of presenting your information is far from academic or fair. As it stands, you're just making yourself out to be a great forum troll. Flame on if you will, but your position will simply lose credibility.
