Totally agreed. Nothing wrong with SVT's, but a 400 PS will shame other amps, including an SVT (of course depending on circumstance and the tone sought). There's an indescribable effect it has when loaded with an 8x10 SVT quad-chambered cab, 2x15 Sunn cab, and w-bin 1x18 cab (cheers to the 3 4ohm taps). It's godly; striking a low note produces a sort of shockwave effect akin to that of an atomic bomb. Especially equipped with the JJ KT88 (yay extended lows!) That said, there's nothing that beats the growl of the SVT. But there's also nothing that compares to a 400 PS, either.
To say that they're meant for scrap is spitting on a fantastic piece of history, and a one-of-a-kind design amp. Ed Jahns was a genius in his own right, and had his hands in the Blackface amps. Forgive the sentiment as I have a soft spot for antiques, but I find your comments unreasonable, and inaccurate. Though still relatively limited, my experiences are contrary to yours.
And I've never experienced the immolation you speak of, and I've operated my 400 PS for shows lasting hours.

May your tubes be lively, warm, and long-lasting. Holy be thy heater.
