As for the SVT & 8x10, yes it was a bit limited for serious oomph. Not on stage, it isn't. It reproduces what needs to be heard just fine.
The Acoustic 371 (370 head and 301 cabinet) was sort of popular in the late 1970s. The 301 cabinet had an 18 facing backwards in a folded W-shaped horn. It would move a lot of low-frequency air, but it was a real dud in the low-mids and mids, and couldn't cut through the mix like an SVT with an 8x10.
Choice of speakers is important. Why force 10's to that task, no matter how "specially designed", when 18's reproduce that part of the spectrum with far less strain.
Because a bass guitar's output at 40 Hz is less than its output at 80 Hz.
40 Hz response is much less important than 80 Hz response for a bass guitar in a live setting. On a recording, too, for that matter, if the truth be told.
No one uses 18s or 15s any more. It's all 10s, and occasionally 12s, because they work better live. And everyone uses DIs for PA support and recording. There was an outfit called El Whappo that was trying to sell a 21" woofer for bass a few years ago, but they predictably went out of business.
