Stewen, I would place more empahsis on voltage swing than gain in the PI section. Think we may have discussed this before. This is where a nice linear tube, like a 6SN7 might be good. If you want to keep that clean tone in the output stage. Until the output tubes start to OD.
And derive most of the earler OD and harmonics from the front end.
I think this is what you are asking.
