The EL34 was and is a pentode, while the original GEC KT77 was a beam tetrode design. Whether the new production KT77's follow the tetrode design, I have no idea.To the OP: the wikepedia article on beam tetrodes describes some of the operational differences between pentodes and beam tetrodes pretty well. If you want more detail on the construction and physics, see the following link. (I'm no specialist on this, just passing on info)
