I have never heard a 30 or a 60, but have owned a pair of 40s for the last 3 or 4 years. I also use them to drive a pair of Altec 604-8g's. With the Altecs being near 100db speakers, I find I rarely use more than 2 or 3 watts . I use a CJ preamp, so I can't comment directly on your preamp query.
I can say that the McIntosh/Altec is an excellent match. Personally if I had a choice, I would choose a MC30 or 225 if I was to do it over again. I just happened to run across a great local deal on the 40s.
I know this isn't exactly matching your question, but thought I could give a little response.
