and you are only registering 20+ ma I can't visualize a problem which will cause tube failure. On my amps with 450 plate voltage I have bias'd my EL34's at 30ma and have never had a problem such as you are experiencing. Probably just a couple of bummer tubes, or as others have suggeted loose contacts in the tube sockets. Interestingly, although probably not relevant I'm not sure where you are in the '20's' but you can bias too low and that will at first sound cool tonally and then distortion will become apparent.
