Sorta. The 7044 has slightly more gain and transconductance, and I've found biases a little differently than 5687 types (draws more current in the same fixed bias circuit).
As to brands, the readily available GEs are very, very good. Amperex are a little warmer, and Sylvanias are a little hotter/brighter. Please don't try any RCAs if you can find them - they're worthless, please just send them to me directly for proper disposal.
