though tight matching may not be critical for driver or gain tubes such as in a DAC, close tolerances utilizing matched pairs, or matched quads, are often called for and recommended in the case of output/power tubes in amps.

I know the original post regards a DAC, but good to know that some applications do prefer truly matched pairs.
