Chris O mentioned the first thing that I thought of which was that the sockets and tube's pins were not making a good contact. If the connection to the G1 pin is not good the tube could "see" 0 volts of bias and run full throttle which would of course make the plates glow.

I have an ST40 which had bad sockets and once in a while the tubes would have cherry red plates. I tightened the sockets contact with a dental pick and that solved the problem. Of course I also cleaned them very well too.

Perhaps that's the problem here too. Let's hope so since it's a $0.00 fix.
