The word musical is something which I struggle with despite it's wide use in audio. Musical is not often used the way your friend is using it. Puch Slam Dynamics, etc. are not what many people think of as "musical" but are nevertheless desirable. I personally prefer systems with those attributes, but with some coloration. I know I used a dirty word but I like a warm euphonic midrange bump. The best way to think of "musical" I find is to compare your analog source in this case a TT against your digital source, which may be punchy and overly analytical and not as musical as your TT.
As for tubes- if that is your intent instead of changing gear, or room treatments, use less stark input tubes and pre tubes, a pair of Older Mullard s from the Blackurn plant will soften your sound for one . Both the Teles and the RCA are very precise and stark you, further you should be getting the charateristics your pal likes from them.
The tube that has the most impact on the sound is the power tube. I would be taking a leap of faith that the amp which is Chinese uses Chinese EL34s. My taste drives me back to a more analytical tube but if you have the money an NOS Phillips conglomerate EL34 will soften up your sound without having to sacrifice detail and extension. As for a currently manufactured I would ask Jim McShane but tell him what you really like. If your buddy doesn't like it that doesn't mean you don't. IMHO for slam try the EH6CA7 not the EL34. For an all purpose I use the JJ E34L but I think this crowd likes the EL84 from JJ not their EL34.
Ironicaly the old "Hi Fi" sound is not what I would have anticipated from the tubes you use now so you and I are up against a semantic wall.
