Re: 6ca7

hey pappy-

i'm currently using a quad of EH 6ca7's (big bottles).. and they come on the heels of some mullard el34's.. midrange is only slightly less buttery-- but for the evenhandedness across the boards and GIRTH.. but good tight bass, not flub-- i REALLY can't give anything but kudos for the 6ca7! apparently, it's a lot more like a 5881 than an el34-- but, i'm really sold on the beam tetrode (i think that's right..) for running bass/full range.. i went on the recommendation of a friend of mine-- and they've yet to prove him wrong-- and having a trioded amp (more stress on the tubes)-- it certainly pays to have a resilient tube, as well.. i would think running the top end, they'd last forever-- although i'd probably recommend them more for the BOTTOM end, as that seems their forte.

if you COULD find them-- you might give the mullards a try on top.. mids on up are fantastic-- but bass isn't so good. el34's just seem to run that way-- at least on my eico-- and it isn't the trannies. flying c's are pretty good-- but in comparison to either the EHs or the mullards sound pretty recessed.. but that's in my circuit!

good luck-- sounds like a killer system!
