I would bias them at 72 to 80ma because your using quads which are very revealing and detailed and accurate so you want the tubes to be as optimal as they can and not sag.Im sure they are reliable as evidenced by the input at new sensor. Why would think that putting in a kt88 in place of a 6550 is a bad idea? The curves and operating points are virtually identical and I know the 6550 sells for less money as far as new tubes so that could be part of the reason driving companies such as audio research and VTL in some cases to use the 6550 as opposed to the kt88.Look at most amps that use these tubes and it generally says 6550/kt88 by each socket as a rule.
You will be fine using those tubes. I have to admit Im not very fond of the newer tube amps but I did hear a nice vtl 6550 amp that sounded extremely impressive.They seem to have hung with the vintage sonic character and a lot of people noticed it at the audio karma fest and it drew lots of attention powering a pair of danish electrostats.
