I have three tube amps running. My ARC D75 has Tung-Sol 6550s burning. My Rogue Atlas is at home with the E-H 6CA7. I do all of my rolling with Quicksilver Mini Monos which have cathode bias. They can play with any EL34/6L6/6550 variant but seem to sound best to me when 6L6's are installed. The auto bias means that some tubes will be operating at less than ideal parameters. Mike Sanders voiced them with the Tesla E34L. He was not at all surprised when I told him the 6L6 was my favorite there.
Like you say though, there is only one real sweet spot.
