Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: What actually happens when a tube wears out?

Eli,
I had a pair of Sylvania 6SN7WGTs short bottle chrome dome, miconol base circa 1950. On my Hickok 800 they measured very strong about 4000 micro-homs. When I used them as drivers in my integrated tube amp they would occasionally produce a popping sound. I removed them immediately. I thought perhaps it was just my amp. I have had several pairs of these tubes and have a pristine NIB NOS pair from Len which are superb sounding. I also traded another very strong but not as strong as the ones I described above to a friend which worked well in both my amp and his. In fact he found it to work the best of a variety of tubes I lent him to try.
So My question is what is the issue with that super strong pair? What causes popping sounds? I warned my buddy to be careful with them. Thanks for a reply.
