Westinghouse 6CG7

70.141.210.227

I'm trying to get settled with NOS 6CG7s as I'm planning to recap and retube an Audio Research amp in the near future. This amp uses 4 6FQ7/6CG7- currently elderly RCA "cleartop" 6FQ7/6CG7, but I am concentrating only on "real" 6CG7s with the center shield.

The amp is packed away and I can't try the 6CG7s out for sound, but I still want to have some spares while these tubes are not outrageously expensive. So far, I've concentrated on the RCA "cleartop" 6CG7, but have also bought a pair of the RCA chrome top, black plate and a pair of grey plate, halo getter TungSols.

The most recent acquisition are Westinghouse 6CG7, but as usual with Westinghouse, I'm not sure who made them. There are (10) same lot tubes: black plate, stirrup getter with the center shield left shiny or plated. The upper micas are doubled with the lower micas quite thin. The stirrup getter is only the second I've seen exactly like this a big D" with a pair of tiny angled blades- or is it just ribbed?- for the straight side. I've seen this only on mid 50's CBS 5814As. The plates have three ribs and are stapled. "337 MADE IN USA N.R. / trademark symbol " and "Westinghouse Electronic Tube" are in primary yellow. The "6CG7" -no box around- is in gold print that reminds me of old Sylvania, and there are two widely spaced dots above and one below, also in the gold print. Above the 6CG7 is "MADE IN USA" in tiny, tiny gold print. The dots and the "61-30" print remind me of GE. I have only one GE 6CG7 to compare, but it's a grey plate halo getter, the plates are welded, and the center shield is coated- completely different. The GE does not have anything like the "6CG7" printing of the Westinghouse. I assume if these were supplied by RCA, they still would have the etched octagon. Boxes are the older Prussian Blue/yellow/white/orange boxes.

Westinghouse tubes are always trouble to identify- can you identify the original maker of these? And where might these fall in the 6CG7 world in terms of sound? It seems I'll probably pursue the RCA cleartop line, but if the RCA chrome tops are preferred I'll have a set of those too.

Did anyone ever use the 6CG7 as a preamp tube or is the gain too low?

-Thanks!- Blazmo
