The standard barium oxide cathode will be destroyed beyond use when exposed to atmospher, whether hot or cold. It will not survive the transplant you suggest.If you want to transplant a cathode you will need a "dispenser" cathode. This type of cathode will servive exposure to atmospher. You can find this type of cathode in some pulse magnetrons, but it will be cylindrical.
Can you use a planar triode? Or do you need a loose cathode and grid assembly? Check out the following emitter sources:
