Re: Tubes as electron source?

The standard barium oxide cathode will be destroyed beyond use when exposed to atmospher, whether hot or cold. It will not survive the transplant you suggest.

If you want to transplant a cathode you will need a "dispenser" cathode. This type of cathode will servive exposure to atmospher. You can find this type of cathode in some pulse magnetrons, but it will be cylindrical.

Can you use a planar triode? Or do you need a loose cathode and grid assembly? Check out the following emitter sources:
