Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Is there a "Tubes for Dummies" book or website?

The now-defunct Sonic Frontiers, manufacturers of some reasonably decent tube amps, put out a short well-written book called "A Taste of Tubes" that they distributed for free in the late 90s. This book was written expressly for newbies and goes into just about all aspects of tube amp history, design and operation. I have a copy that I have read and re-read many times and it's a very enjoyable and informative little book with lots of great photos and easily understood diagrams. I haven't a clue where to get a copy today, but I would urge you to at least try. Also, you may want to go to both the Upscale Audio and Vacuum Tube Valley websites. Both of these sites have general tube amp information for beginners. The VTV site has an "FAQ" that goes into the various tube amp types such as Class A, AB, Ultralinear and SETs, and also explains the advantages and limitations of these designs. IMO the best source of information is our fellow Tubes Asylum inmates.
