that is to say there are amps which are designed, for example around the EL34 which usually sound warm thru the mid range and very plesant to general listening. Compare these to amps designed around the 6550/KT88/KT90 - these are more powerful tubes, put out a crisper sound and are more neutral in tone.Once you have selected your amp type its a toss up which tubes effect the sound more - if you are staying with the same type, i.e. KT88 for example and you have good current production tubes, I'd focus on rolling the small tubes. Bottom line is, however both the small tubes and the power tubes effect the sound, and often the best sound is a result of experimentation with both types and finding a good comb.
