They most definitely are not equivalent to 'CC88. The 'ES8 is a variable mu tube designed for use with AGC in VHF front ends. It's TOUGH to get satisfactory audio service from the 'ES8. Cathode follower duty is OK.You might be able to use them in a phono stage's 1st gain block, IF a suitable operating point can be found. Do not try 'ES8s in a 6DJ8 phono circuit. Using the 'ES8 in a phono stage is, IMO, very much a thorny DIY problem.
