6c45pi v. 5842

I need a little help here. I have a Supratek Syrah that uses 6c45pi (4) in the phono stage. I was told that I could substitute the 5842 for them. But, when I put in the 5842, no joy. I get nothing.
Any ideas?
Tech-speak goes right over my head. Easy answers would be nice!
