Reduce Hiss w/Gain Control?

I am using a Radio Craftsmen CA-11 PP Integrated Amp for my center channel in the home theater. It has volume, tone and base adjustments. It also produces a good hisssss on my 96db speaker. The hiss is affected by the tone control and volume control. It also has a level dial on the back. I turned the volume all of the way up and used the level control on the back of the unit to dial down the hiss. I then turned up the center channel volume at the pre amp level and no more problem. What I am wondering is if by turning down the amp's gain and turning up the preamp's gain is the quality of sound affected or is it a net zero affect on the sound? I know this is subjective, I guess I am wondering about it technically. What I am going to do about the hiss is another issue for later, I am just making it work for now.
