Re: CBS Hytron 5814a identification

Thanks for the ID. I have another pair of them that are allegedly from the late 50's, but the guy didn't know for sure. They look the same. Except that pair has one strong and one weak tube, barely in the weak range on my Hickok. Also that pair is noisy. I have an EL34 pushpull power amp that uses AC filament and no feedback. It sounds fabulous, very spatious and airy, and is very sensitive to the 12au7 pair in it. Noisy tubes are really noisy. Good quiet tubes are heaven. I knew the CBS were great from the first pair experiment, if I could find a quiet, strong pair. I was using a pair of Mullard CV4003 because they were very quiet and not bad. I also have a pair of Brimar - unknown vintage, but similar box plates to the CV4003 although minor differences in tube constuction, that are pretty good. However, the CBS Hytron stomps all over those tubes. Just riiiggghhhtt. Now I need to find another pair for backup and I should be set for life! If you know a good source for these I would love to know....
cheers,
Don
