It's definitely a Cary. I never said that the fact that Fred owns a SET eliminates his bias. I said that the fact that he owns a SET refutes your claim that he only likes his sound cool and lean.

Because people make mistakes. Because some people may want a sound somewhere in between ARC and C-J, e.g., treble and bass of ARC and midrange of CJ.

If you want talk about sales hype, then Michael Green or Electraglide's posts at Soundstage is what comes to my mind. I find none of Fred's post (nor any of BAT's here for that matter) to consitute sales hype. IMHO, there is a distinction to be made between manufacturer's and retailers. Following your line of reasoning, all dealer recommendations are sales hype. If a dealer sells Tube A, Tube B, Tube C and Tube D, and in response to a post seeking help, he says he likes Tube D best, what does he stand to gain? If Fred really liked the JJ/Tesla KT88 more than the KT90, he would only have something to gain by saying so, since they sell for more $.
Furthermore, you never bothered responding to the original poster's question. As I recall from your Jadis review at Audio Review, you have owned the Svetlana 6550C, JJ/Tesla KT88, and Yugo EI KT90. If you disagree with Fred's conclusions and think they constitute sales hype, back it up with your own experience. I only posted his comparison because Fred owns virtually the same amp as the original poster's (The CA50 is an integrated version of the VT50).
