Re: SP16 - Tube Rolling

WW,

I haven't played with an SP16 myself so I'm speculating a bit.

The SP16 was suppposed to have been designed around- the sound optimized for- the Electro-Harmonix 12AX7EH. i'm not sure how this figures into a tube choice equation, as i don;t know the nature of the sound these make- but there it is.

Typically, it will be the first two positions of the Phono stage and first two of the Line stage that make the most impact and I would try these first. You are correct that the cathode follwers only need to be quiet to fullfill their job descrition.

Choices to consider for the Phono would include:

1. Amperex Bugle Boy - or really any early to mid 60's Philips 12AX7- Philips or Valvo branded are wonderful tubes. The orange globe labelled Amperex are a bit later, to me very fine also ,while cheaper than the BB series. These Amperex are for me a clear first choice in Phono.
2. Siemens ECC83- very nice also, a bit more agressive than the Philips made. i have the Siemens E83CC triple mica which some find too fast and punchy, but I love those in my ARC SP8 revision 4. they also really liven up the old McIntosh gear.
3. Don't discount the excellent RCA 7025- these are fantastic.

For the line stage- since there may be digital lurking, I would consider:
1. A pair of the aforementioned RCA 7025s or regular 12AX7s- with the squared off micas.
2. I'ce used some early sqaure getter Sylvanias and these are lush and deep if you like that kind of sound.

I would be interested too if 5751 would sound good in the SP16. The gain is a bit lower than the 12AX7, but the sound of the old black plate, square getters tubes in the right spsots is amazing. I was so excited by the sound of these, I eventually bought 20!

I am not so excited generally by Telefunken and Mullard 12AX7s, but many, many people prefer these makers over all others. The Mullard M8137- if you ever see earlier production is a great one.

Cheers,

Bambi B
