Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Because as usual Jim, your contribution is a good one. I appreciate the thoughtfullness and background you bring to this forum. I do understand how these are supposed to work, and I know that heat is not a power tubes buddy. I can clarify and point out that this is not a black and white situation.

1. As I noted, I HAVE looked at a number of older accounts of the use and testing of tube coolers for small tubes. I use coolers on mine.

2. I also looked at lots of info on power tube cooling before I got my coolers. The power tube info seems to be well reasoned, except for some graphs which I remember indicated that some power tubes would have a net increase in temperature overall even though the hot spots were drawn down a bit.

3. Now the real world stuff.
Item 1:
The guy in this thread who had his amp go critical in overheating.
Item 2:
I have an amp that is crowded with tubes and transformers. This may be and I think it is an important variable in my situation. My coolers just about touched each other, and they did snug up against the trannie housings. My rectifiers and other tubes are less than an inch from the installed coolers.

I did my cooler testing a couple of years ago and I don't recall the temperatures found. I do remember that on EL34 the cooler did not reduce the temperature around the middle of the tubes-it was about the same as it had been. I found that the top of the tubes increased in temperature rapidly and significantly, well above the previously measured control temp, and in light of the absence of heat loss lower in the tubes, I stopped that part of the test right away.

You cite tube max temperatures as though it was perfectly fine for them to be there, as though that were an acceptable operating point. I think that given the normal operating conditions, there is no reason that the tube should go near maximum. I don't think more temp is necessarily better, even if the middle of the tube is somewhat cooler-which mine were not.

4. While these coolers may work for people with particular tubes and certain amps, my experience and learning does not lead me to the conclusion that it works for every situation.
