Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Is tube gear more susceptible to damage from lightning or power outages?

Seems like a friend is always having something go wrong with his tubed gear. Blown tubes here, blown tubes there. Onn time 4 amp tubes blew up on me when I was using the system. Nothing like calling your buddy up at work to tewll him 4 tubes went south! The other thing is the preamp - it's had tubes replaced and has been taken out fo the system for repair a few times now. Quite the hassle. My friend was wondfering if his problems might have anything to do with power outages. He does not know of any lightning strikes in the area, but the power does go out from time to time, more so than anyone would care for. Can tube gear be more at risk to damage from lightning or power outages than solid state gear? FWIW, the amps and pre are AtmaShpere's. Being tubed gear, the units are not left powered up when not in use.
