Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Was gonna buy the M50's-My suggestions

I have a smallish room the same dimensions as your own.I was looking to get the Axes till I was able to find a pair of NEAR's(lucky Me!).

Power is not a great factor for the Axes as they are quite efficient and with a $500 limit you are asking a tough question. When I was building a system the best amp for the $$ was a B&K.You might want to try finding a used B&K ST-202!You might be able to find a Modified one for $400.WHat that will do is take away the MOSFET Mist or Veiling found in most amps out!The Sound is Krell like or cleaner than most Low Cost amps!
For a Pre-Amp I would go with a FT-Audio Passive LW-1 reviewed here!

I have not bought one yet ,but I am planning on shortly!Paul Lam will answer any questions you might have concerning the unit.

Speaker placement should be atleast 2' out from the wall Towed in ,6'-8' spread apart.Try that and experiment!

I have heard the Axes are alittle shy in the Bass. You might want to get a Sub and for the $$ I have an NHT Subonei($450) or try a Paradigm PDR-12 I believe for around the same price.

I had heard the Counterpoints,Adcom,Rotels and a few other amps before getting the B&K and for my taste it was the B&K all-the-way!Getting a Modified is the way to go!

Remember that Axes are Metal driver's and they will possibly take Months to breakin!Especially in an apartment so do not be to quick to judge them.I am happy with the NEAR's which have Metal driver's also!

If I were to get an Axiom speaker I might go with the M50's or the 22's I believe they are called.

Good Luck!
