Re: Speaker mods - Dynaco A-25 - Dahlquist DQ-10

Unless you are doing it for the learning experience and or the love of these old classics, Why ?
I wouldnt waste my time, there are much better speakers available today.
When you think about your time, and cost, then what do ya got?
Its like my building his 4500 lb station wagons engine for high performance.
So what if it makes 350 horses, its still in a station wagon !
The above is for the Dynacos.
As for the dollies DQ 10, get rid of that god awful piezoelectric Squawker, soupertweater, or whatever you want to call it.
I recall someone using the raven ribbons, or was it the decca's ribbons on it.
Man, those Dollies are getting old !
I remember spending many nights in front of them smoking wacky tobacky and trippin out on the blue glow of the tubes and watching the snow fall on a cold Michigan night.
I know Bob Carver, and he and Jon Dahlquist were friends, close friends.
A Phase Linear 400 will light up the Dahlquists, and they were voiced by Jon for this amp.
SO, if I were you, I would simply replace all the caps, resolder all the connections, and I mean ALL the connections, and find me a used Phase 400, replace its caps too, especially its power supply caps, and go from there.
I used this combo for years, BUT, I used an Audible Illusions Tube Pre amp the Dual Mono one.
The Dahllies really come to life with a 400.
Perhaps post this questions on Vintage asylum.
You may get some action there as well ?
Good Luck
Chris
