Its simple
They take a pink noise signal and put one watt of power into
the speaker with a microphone 1 meter away
The amount of decibals that is output is measured as the effciency of the loudspeaker...
Example
Your older speakers have a higher reading in decibals with one
watt of pink noise
Say your old speakers are 90db one watt/one meter
Your new speakers are 86db one watt/one meter
Thats 4db less output on the new speakers with the same amount of power...get it now?
Even 3db is perceived as a huge amount of difference.
